Level 1: Introductory Chinese (Block 1)

This course is a beginning level course of Mandarin Chinese designed for students without any Chinese Language background. Introductory Chinese will provide you with a rudimentary knowledge of Mandarin phonetic system (Pinyin), pronunciation, tones, the writing system, daily vocabulary, and basic sentence structure. Speaking and Listening practice will be emphasized in this course. Students will learn how to greet, ask for names, ask for nationality, ask about the address, ask the date etc.

Level 2: Elementary Chinese I (Block 2)

This course is designed for those who have completed Introductory Chinese or the equivalent (30 class hrs). This course will help students improve their vocabulary, enhance their Chinese speaking, listening, writing and reading abilities. At the completion of the course, students will be able to use Chinese to ask for the price, order dishes in a restaurant, change money in a bank, borrow books in a library, etc. Students are expected to make short conversations related to daily life.

Taichi for Main Campus

This interactive class will introduce you to the philosophy and practice of Tai Chi, an ancient Chinese health exercise. Tai Chi is a form of energy cultivation and internal martial arts. You’ll learn the techniques of relaxation, breathing, and balance. Tai Chi offers health benefits such as reducing tension, high blood pressure, and arthritis.

Taichi in the Garden (Gregg Museum)

The Gregg is partnering with NC State’s Confucius Institute to offer a Taichi class led by Yan Wu, Chinese & Culture Instructor, in the Jackson-Thiem formal garden. Originating from an ancient Chinese martial art, Taichi has developed as a graceful form of exercise involving a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner accompanied by deep breathing. Each posture flows into the next without pause, ensuring that the body is in constant motion to achieve peace and calm. Space is limited. Please register at http://go.ncsu.edu/taichi
